What Are Dental Fillings?
Cavities are one of the most common dental problems, created when bacteria eats away at tooth enamel. At Lincoln Peak Dental, dentist Dr. Brian Saltzman uses a variety of materials, such as amalgam, cast gold, composite, porcelain, and glass ionomer, to fill and protect cavities. For more information on how fillings can help protect the integrity of your mouth, contact our Middlebury, VT office to schedule a dental exam today.
Can I Get A Dental Filling?
Most people have had a cavity at least once in their life; so if you need a filling now, you're not alone. During your bi-annual teeth cleaning or annual dental exam, we will check your teeth for cavities. If we find you have a cavity, we may suggest taking care of it with a filling. While tooth fillings are generally safe for everyone, you should let our team know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding so we can take extra precautions.
What Can I Expect From The Dental Filling Process?
Receiving a filling at Lincoln Peak Dental is a relatively easy process. While we offer a variety of fillings, the process is generally the same. The area surrounding your cavity will be numbed with a local anesthetic to help you feel more comfortable. Stronger sedation methods may be discussed if you have any fears or dental anxieties. Once you're numb, the decayed enamel is treated using a special drill that Dr. Saltzman will select based on the location of your cavity and the amount of decay. After the enamel is cleared away and the area is disinfected, the area will be filled with the chosen filling material and set. Dr. Saltzman will polish the filling so it feels comfortable.

What Is Recovering From A Dental Filling Like?
You should be able to return to your normal day once your filling is complete, but you may have some sensitivity to hot and cold food and beverages for a few days. You can take nonprescription pain medication to minimize discomfort, but you should not have any major problems. If your filling seems uneven or high, please call our office. Your filling should be kept clean by following a regular home care routine including daily brushing and flossing. At your annual exams, Dr. Saltzman will assess your filling and determine if it needs to be repaired or replaced.

Are Dental Fillings in Middlebury, VT Covered By Insurance?
Dental fillings are a common treatment for cavities that are usually covered partially by dental insurance. A member of our team will talk to your dental insurance company to determine your exact coverage before calculating your out-of-pocket expense. If you don't have dental insurance, Dr. Saltzman can go over the payment options we accept during your consultation to ease the finacial burden of getting quality dental care.
